Trade and Hallmarks on Firearms in Belgium
Trade and Hallmarks on Firearms in Belgium is a must for any serious collector of Belgian made guns. The author was one of the few to gain access to the Liege proof-house and obtain authorization for reproducing his findings. It includes Liege proof marks from 1672 to 1998 / FN Browning Firearm codes / list of Belgian factory names and trademarks. Trademarks are particularly interesting to determine the manufacture of specific lesser known names which often are undocumented in any US reference books. Most importantly it includes the list of Liege proof-house date stamps and a list of all Liege proof-house inspectors since 1924! The date stamps are crucial for dating your shotguns and it is nice to find out the names of the inspectors who proofed your gun. Date stamps are typically found on shotgun barrels and the inspector’s stamps are found on all receivers, barrels (and pistol slides). This book is recommended only for the detailed collector seeking hard to find data, this book is not profusely illustrated.
This massive coffee table style book is the revised edition to Four Centuries
of Liege Gunmaking. Written by Claude Gaier, the curator of the Liege Firearms
Museum, it more than introduces the reader to teh history of teh Liege gun
industry from the earliest of times in the 15th century to the modern times of
the late 20th century. More than 100 pages are dedicated to the 20th century which distinguishes this edition to the previous 4 centuries of Liege Gunmaking which ended with the 19th century. No collector of Antique firearsm should miss out on this title. More modern collectors have also much to look forward to as the book outlines the complete history but also some interesting factors like details about engraving and engravers.
